Sending local currencies out of their region with Wise
You can use Wise to send GBP to bank accounts outside of the UK - so long as they’re denominated in GBP and have an IBAN. However these transfers are carried out over the SWIFT network, so you’ll be charged an extra £3.95 on top of the Wise fee.
You can also use Wise to send EUR to banks outside of SEPA, but these transfers are also carried out over the SWIFT network, so there is an extra charge of €3.55 on top of the Wise fee.
Exchange rates
Wise always offers the mid-market rate for international money transfers - which we appreciate, as there are no hidden costs when it comes to sending money abroad. It means you’ll get the true exchange rate for your currency exchange - and Wise won’t take any money aside from the previously mentioned fees.
Money transfer providers usually charge either an exchange rate markup, a transfer fee, or a combination of both to make money.
Wise only charges a fee, but other providers, like TorFX and Instarem do the opposite - they don’t charge a transfer fee at all, just an exchange rate markup.

Despite generally fast speeds, a money transfer with Wise can take anywhere from seconds to days - it depends on the country and currency you choose as well as the payment method. While this isn’t ideal, as you can’t depend on it to be fast or consistent for any transfer you need to make, it’s worth checking out to see if it offers a good speed for your circumstances.

Wise have their own transfer limits, and they vary depending on your payment type:
You’ll be able to send up to $1.2 million per wire transfer, with no daily or weekly limits
You can send a maximum of $15,000 per transfer or per day by ACH bank debit
You can send up to $2,000 per transfer or per day via debit/credit card (and a maximum of $8,000 a week)
If you have a Wise multi-currency account, you will be able to send up to $6 million from your account. You’ll also be able to add up to $6 million to your Wise account balance.

Type of transfers available
When you transfer money with Wise, you’ll generally be able to pay for your transfer through one of the following methods:
ACH bank transfers
Wise, like many money transfer providers, have a network of local bank accounts across the world, which allows them to move money around without technically crossing borders. This means they avoid the SWIFT banking system and its high fees and long transfer times - so using an ACH bank transfer will often work out your cheapest method.
It can sometimes be your fastest too - as an example, when sending money from the USA to Mexico, bank transfers arrive in seconds. Credit and debit card payments take a half hour - while also being much more expensive.
Wire transfers
While Wise make use of their network of local bank accounts to provide cheap bank transfers, they do also allow wire transfers for some routes. This method does use the SWIFT banking network, and it applies for transfers in yen (Japan), rand (South Africa), and outgoing transfers of US dollars.
These wire transfers often work out more expensive, so it’s advisable to check with the banks involved in the transfer to see what fees you might face. It’s better to stick with ACH transfers rather than wire transfers, especially if you’re using Wise in the USA.
Debit card payments
With Wise, debit card payments can sometimes be faster than either ACH or wire transfers - but this isn’t always the case. However, they often come with higher fees. Certain currencies are free, but others involve a fee of up to 2% of your transaction when you send money by debit card.
With Wise, when you transfer from the USA to anywhere in the EU, debit card payments take the same time as ACH bank transfers - yet they’re much more expensive.
Credit card payments
Like debit cards, credit card payments can sometimes be faster but are almost always more expensive than any other method of paying. Using a credit card to make payments with Wise always come with an extra fee, no matter what currency you use. The actual fee that applies can be up to 2%, depending on the currency and type of credit card.
Where you can transfer money
Wise allows you to send money to over 45 currencies, from major to more exotic. These are fairly high numbers, certainly higher than some other providers - so if you’re looking for a provider that can cover lots of bases then Wise is a good shout.
However other providers like XE do offer a wider range of supported countries - so it’s always useful to compare your options for the transfer you need.

We had to answer some automated questions to get to the right person but this was pretty quick - and they answered in seconds. We were asked to quote our membership number but ‘for some reason this wasn’t coming up’.
They still answered our general questions, and the person who we spoke to took the team to explain all their fees, payment methods and transfer methods. They did take time to point out how their fees were generally lower than competitors, but in general they answered all our questions clearly and helpfully.

Sending money with Wise
To actually send money with Wise requires a bit more time - for us, it took around 20 minutes from start to finish. Here’s how we did it:
Initiate transfer
We entered the amount and currency we wanted to send, the payment type we preferred and the currency we wanted the recipient to get. We were shown the exact amount they’ll get in the receiving currency, plus Wise’s fee breakdown and the rate we were able to guarantee. Wise also showed us an estimate for when the money should arrive.
Add transfer details
Then we needed to add further information about the transfer - first, we chose from personal or business transfers
Add recipient information
We added details about who the recipient is - choosing from either ourselves, someone else, or a business or charity
Add recipient bank details
Then we added more information, including their full name, email and bank account details. If they’re in Europe we would need their full IBAN number, but for those outside of Europe we needed their IBAN/account number and SWIFT/BIC code. This is because these transfers are sent via the SWIFT network
Verify identity
We had to verify our identity next, which we could do either by email link or QR code. We used our phone’s camera to scan the QR code, which sent us a link to take a picture of our identity document and a selfie
Answer security questions
Then we were prompted to answer a few more security questions. We told them what our account is for and which country we intend to send and receive money from. Then we were asked for our annual income and its main source, as part of measures against financial crime
Review transfer details
We reviewed the details of our transfer. At this point we were reminded that we could cancel for a full refund within 30 minutes of payment unless it’s already been picked up or deposited
Pay for your transfer
We paid for our transfer using our chosen method. For a connected bank transfer, we had to connect our bank account to Wise - this verification was relatively quick.
Finalize your transfer
Once this is done, we were able to finalize the transfer and send the money on.
We found the sending money process with Wise to be pretty straightforward. The steps were simple and easy to follow, and we finished everything on our side without any hitches. Remember it’s crucial to do your part too - entering your details correctly and verifying your identity with clear photos ensures it goes as fast as possible.

You don’t need to have an account to receive money with Wise. The sender can have the funds deposited directly into the recipient’s bank account, and they’ll be notified when the funds are available.
Do I need a bank account to join Wise?
You don’t need a bank account to join Wise, as you’ll have the option to pay by debit or credit card too. However keep in mind that this can be very expensive with high fees, so it’s generally best to connect a bank account to your Wise account.

I made a transfer to a Canadian company 1.5 months ago, and the funds have not yet been received. After multiple emails, Wise insists that the money was paid out. However, I have received an official statement from the recipient’s bank confirming that the money has not been received. Wise's complaints department sent me a final letter stating that, according to their records, the funds were paid out.
Additionally, Wise states the following in their Customer Agreement regarding their responsibility for losses:

"Our Customer Agreement also explains our responsibility for losses in Section 29:
29.1 Unforeseeable loss or damage. We are not responsible for any loss or damage that is not foreseeable. Loss or damage is foreseeable if either it is obvious that it will happen or if, at the time the contract was made, both we and you knew it might happen, for example, if you discussed it with us during your sign-up process.
29.9 We are not liable for things which are outside of our control. We (and our affiliates) cannot be liable for our inability to deliver or delay because of things which are outside our control."
Despite these terms, Wise has not been able to resolve this issue, and the money has still not been delivered as promised.
I find it irresponsible that Wise does not conduct any investigations into the matter. The Canadian bank associated with Wise is unable to provide any information, as everything goes through Wise. Wise must be capable of tracking the funds and providing precise details about where exactly the money is, who received it, and to which bank account it was deposited.
I would advise everyone to be cautious when transferring large sums of money with Wise. They are not capable of executing a secure money transfer!

Beware: Wise's Unethical Policies and Unresponsive Support Cost My Business
I am sharing my experience with Wise to warn fellow business owners about the serious risks and unacceptable practices you may encounter if you choose to use their services.
My business, is a legally registered travel agency in the UK, and I relied on Wise to manage payments for my photography and cultural tours, primarily in South America. Things took a turn for the worse when Wise froze my account and accused my business of violating their Acceptable Use Policy, citing my once-a-year humanitarian trip to Cuba.
Despite explaining multiple times that:
No Cuba-related transactions were ever processed through Wise (I use a separate European bank for this purpose),
My tours comply with the “Support for Cuban People” category authorized by OFAC, designed to help Cuban citizens outside state control,
Wise completely ignored the facts. Their customer support team responded with automated messages, refused to engage in any meaningful dialogue, and even lied, claiming they didn't monitor my emails—despite clear evidence to the contrary. After days of chasing them and providing thorough documentation, they chose to close my account without justification.
The Consequences:
Wise left my business in chaos, disrupting essential transactions and client arrangements.

I have been a customer for a few years. Yes I love the instant deposits as I make around $1K. However as many non US entities Wise uses a bank out of New York. Therefore the TRANSFER and DEPOSIT from an account transfer can take 4 to 6 days. What this means is that you will not able to make another ACH transfer during this time. This is frustrating if you have to make a follow up transfer in a few days. All in all don't plan to make more than 4 transfer in a month because it may not fo through, Not sure if other transfer companies operate the same way but I am about to find out as I will try Revolute. Bottom linw will require you to use ANOTHER payment method like credit card or some other method. Understand this: YOU MAY HAVE THE MONEY IN YOUR ACCOUNT but they WILL NOT TRY TO VERIFY IT WITHIN THE THE PERIOD IT WILL TAKE THEM TO DEPOSIT IT IN YOUR ACCOUNT. To add insult to injury I called in and the agent siad that they can see that they got paid but the computer takes time to update/reconcille I guess! It is a slow system!

There is a lot of advice on RECEIVING INHERITANCE in the UK from overseas but nothing on the rules for SENDING money gifts to grandchildren living OVERSEAS and the rules on Inheritance Tax in that case.

The service is decent, nothing more. I have had security issues that are not quickly resolved. Call center personnel are average. The app is not, in general, user friendly. You should definitely do research on a variety of service providers before making a choice. Do not take the reviews at face value. I chose Wise based on positive reviews but now regret not doing more research on other companies.

I have used Wise for several years. They once rejected a large transfer because it was to a coal company. Apparently, they are a woke company! But they refused to tell me why. More recently, they required verification of my identity using a smart phone. I am 69 and never owned a cell phone because I don't need one. But they forced me to buy one, which I did last week. Getting the phone updates ate up all my data, so i got 1 GB more. I took 12 different pics of my passport and another 12 of my face for them. They rejected them - and are holding up my transfer. Now my phone ate up that gig of data and I must buy another gig (thru Tracfone) just to use the phone. What a hassle. This is not a photo studio! They know who i am already.

i've heard of people having issues with accounts being locked/restricted, but i think that was mostly for business accounts, maybe they were locked for good reason. for me, i've had no issue with my account though i've only used it for small transfers and not very often, over the past 5+ years
